Organic vegie box subscriber scheme

Very exciting news! Community Foods is now a drop-off point for local organically grown vegies.

People can subscribe to this second season for $47 per week for a 3 month period. This price includes freight cost. The box should feed 4 people easily.

They are available through a CSA scheme. C.S.A. is an acronym for Community Supported Agriculture.

It is a members based system which is totally different from conventional monocropping farming. In a CSA system growers and consumers share the benefits and risks of farming.

In becoming a member of a CSA you’ll be a valuable part of a real food community, and not just a customer.

Payments are needed in advance because our farmers are growing food specifically for you. They commit to growing food for us members, and they need us to be committed to them.

How do I join?

Members pay a subscription (in advance) every three months. In return, the farmers provide a weekly box of mixed vegetables and/or fruit.

Please contact the farmers directly for a membership form. Their email is: kuliliya@yahoo.com.au

Inquiries about next season are welcome. Next season will begin in late August. Subscriptions for this season are now open.

Benefits:

Locally grown, organic/ bio-dynamic food = very low food miles & optimum planet/human health

Know the people who grow your food

Mutual support between the farming families and yours.

What’s in a box?

The boxes contain a seasonal variety of mixed organic vegies. In any box, you can expect to find about ten different vegetables. If you wish, you can ‘add on’ fruit to your box for a different price. Below is a list which will give you some idea (a rough guideline) of what’s in a box, but please understand that this will vary depending on the season. It will fluctuate a little. For example, you probably won’t get broccoli and tomatoes in the same box very often!:

  • Potatoes and/or Sweet potatoes or Tarobeetparscarr_small_wince.jpg
  • Carrots Onions and/or Spring onions
  • Garlic
  • Beetroot
  • Lettuce
  • Asian Greens and/or Silverbeet
  • Cabbage and/or Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Zucchini
  • Cucumbers
  • Radishes
  • Parsnips
  • Herbs etc.

The boxes will be supplied from June until January.

Please get in touch if you are interested or you want to know more!

Flour Mill

We have a fabulous new flour mill ready to grind some fresh flour for you.

You can have wheat, rye, kamut, buckwheat, rice, quinoa, millet or amaranth ground.

It is now also possible to make besan flour from chickpeas, and to grind linseeds too. flour_mill_wince.jpg

Spelt - why isn't any grain available?

The Australian harvest was poor which left us with no grain available.

Organic Spelt flour currently on the market is mostly imported from Canada and it will likely remain this way until November 2010.

It will not be possible to import Spelt grain so it looks like we will have to go without.

I can recommend the Kamut grain that we have in store though. It's delicious, and a fine substitute for spelt.

Honey

We now have two kinds of honey in stock.

Our original honey that we still stock is from the Atherton Tablelands. The honey bees forage in rainforest there.
