Below are some of the questions that our friendly volunteers get asked on a regular basis. We thought you might have similar questions and would appreciate the answers. Of course, if you have other queries, please feel free to contact us and we can answer personally.
Q: I am wanting to eat gluten-free - what can I eat?
A: Try other grains such as quinoa, polenta, buckwheat or millet. There are many rices to choose from too. We also have some gluten-free pastas to choose from.
Q: Is there gluten in spelt, rye, oats, and kamut?
A: Yes. If you are not entirely gluten intolerant you may find spelt and kamut digest easier than wheat. Rye contains less gluten than wheat. Oats themselves do not contain gluten, but the equipment they are processed on also processes gluten containing products.
Q: Where is your honey from and is it organic?
A: The honey is sourced from Ravenshoe. It is not heated, and is not certified organic. It is, however, straight from rainforest-dwelling bees, which we consider to be good clean honey suppliers.
We also have a second honey in stock now. This is from the Edmonton Valley, a more urban setting.
Q: What is agave?
A: Agave is a syrup produced from a succulent (like a cactus) in Mexico. You can use it like maple syrup as it is runny and sweet. The other good thing about it is that it has a Glycaemic Index (GI) of only 19, which makes it suitable for diabetics and people with hypoglycaemia.
Q: Are insecticide-free products organic?
A: No, they are not certified organic, but they are a step better than conventionally farmed produce, as they have not been sprayed with insecticides.
Q: Should I bring my own jars to your shop?
A: Yes! You will receive a 5% discount when most of your shopping jars and bags are your own recycled ones.
Q: Do you have flour?
A: We have many grains and a flour mill, so we can freshly grind the grain of your choice. We also stock 1kg bags of unbleached white spelt flour.
Q: What is tahini?
A: Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds. The dark unhulled tahini is made form the darker unhulled sesame seeds, and the lighter coloured tahini is made from the more common pale sesame seeds.
Q: Do you add anything to the peanuts when you make peanut butter?
A: No, the peanut butter is made purely from organic dry roasted Australian peanuts.
Q: There are many dates. What is the difference between them?
A: The dates (from Alice Springs) vary a lot, in both appearance and taste. The biggest are the Medjool which have the most plump, sweet flavour. The Khadrawy are also very sweet and moist, but a little smaller. The dry variety we stock is the Thory which has a gorgeous caramelly flavour. The Thory are particularly chewy, so you need good teeth for them! We sometimes have other varieties depending on the season.
Q: Do you need volunteers at the moment?
A: Generally, yes, we always welcome new volunteers. Come in and introduce yourself, tell us what time would suit you and we will work out a shift for you. Often people work about 2 – 4 hour shifts.
